One or two lithium-ion rechargeable batteries are currently in use per cell phone and other mobile devices, and 600 to 1800mAh rectangular products are used for these. Meanwhile, small, lightweight laminated products less than 400mAh are used in ultra-compact devices such as Bluetooth related devices, remote controls and portable digital audio players. The electrode structure of our companys high capacity laminated type was changed from the conventional rolled type to a molded laminated type, and we optimized an electrode that succeeded in lowering internal impedance. This enables high current discharge at 5C to 10C unlike conventional products, and can be used for power applications such as electrically-assisted bicycles, electric wheelchairs, power tools, robots and cordless cleaners, and for long-life applications such as UPS. Use of this high capacity laminated type can extend the operating time and running distance at one charge by around 2 or 3 times that of nickel-cadmium and lead storage batteries. Manganese-type lithium-ion rechargeable batteries using manganese materials for the positive electrode, in particular, can resist overcharging and over-current, are very safe such as thermal stability, thus they are expected as power supplies for hybrid vehicles, electric motorcycles and other large machines.
Further, with the increased interest in supporting RoHS directives (2002/95/EC) and the environment vis-a-vis harmful substances in recent years, lithium-ion rechargeable batteries are environmentally-friendly, and are attracting attention as an alternative to lead storage and nickel-cadmium batteries.
