Increase in safety and decrease in cost. Spinel manganese is used
as a cathode material.
Prismatic
The
NEC TOKIN Corporation's prismatic lithium ion rechargeable battery
uses spinel manganese as a cathode material. Compared to conventional
cobalt type batteries, a battery of this type achieves a resistance
to overcharging while sustaining a high level of safety and at the
same time supplies stable power. Outstanding safety enables the
protection circuit built in a battery pack to be simplified and
helps to reduce the overall cost of a power supply system. The prismatic
lithium ion rechargeable battery is attracting a great deal of attention
as a battery for mobile phones and PDA devices which are required
to be increasingly compact and lightweight.
Production of prismatic lithium ion rechargeable batteries was started
at the Toyama Plant in Japan in July 1996 and at our Tochigi Plant
in March 1999. The engineering team at NEC TOKIN Corporation's headquarters
is in charge of the design and development of battery packs, chargers,
and applications.
