NEC TOKIN Enters Laminated Lithium-Ion Battery and Electric Motorcycle Market

Aims to Make Taiwan Launching Pad to Global Market

NEC TOKIN Corporation (President: Masakazu Okabe; Head office: Sendai, Japan) announces that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with leading Taiwanese battery pack and module manufacturer TD HiTech Energy Inc. ("TD HiTech") for technical cooperation in order to enter the Taiwanese electric motorcycle and scooter market. The lithium-ion battery pack developed with the battery cell supplied by NEC TOKIN is ready to be the first in the industry to become certified under the Taiwanese safety standards for electric motorcycles. NEC TOKIN is advancing projects with the aim of using this as a launching pad for entering the global electric motorcycle/scooter market.

NEC TOKIN's laminated lithium-ion battery uses lithium manganese oxide as the cathode material, which provide high thermal stability even at high power. It also uses a laminate structure, providing excellent heat dissipation. Together, these features deliver a high level of safety. Since it was first used in electrically-assisted bicycles in 2002, this battery has been used in such applications as electric lawnmowers, electric wheelchairs, and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS). Starting in the latter half of fiscal 2009, the company will also start mass production of battery electrodes for EVs, HEVs, and other environmentally friendly cars.

TD HiTech's battery pack has been certified by many global and international systems design companies, and it has already won several large contracts. TD HiTech was searching for a leading battery manufacturer as a partner to create a market for low carbon-emission electric motorcycle/scooters using lithium-ion batteries.

According to the memorandum of understanding, NEC TOKIN will supply high-performance, high-output laminated lithium-ion battery cells to TD HiTech, and TD HiTech will develop lithium-ion battery packs and systems optimized for electric motorcycles, using its core technology in battery management systems (BMS).

The 48V/20Ah lithium-ion battery pack developed for electric scooters was the first in the industry to become most likely to be certified for the Taiwanese Electric Motorcycle Subsidy Policy and Criteria. The safety testing for certification under these criteria uses the similar test criteria as BATSO (Battery Safety Organization), which is an international safety standard for light electric vehicles (LEVs) and electric motorcycles/scooters planned to be in effect as of 2010. That makes the product to earn the certification of the BATSO standard for the electric motorcycle/scooter market in advance.

NEC TOKIN will develop the business in the Taiwanese market, with the aim of expanding to the global electric motorcycle/scooter market in the future.

News Release for Press Conference

TD HiTech Energy Inc. (TD HiTech Energy), a subsidiary of Welldone Group announces today the signing of the Memorandum Of understanding (MOU) on the collaboration with NEC TOKIN Corporation (NEC TOKIN), a well-known Japanese lithium-ion battery manufacturer,  in the business of the lithium ion battery for the electric scooters and electric motorcycles in Taiwan.  The two parties also announce that the performance of the lithium ion battery pack with the battery cell supplied by NEC TOKIN is ready to fulfill all the requirements necessary to meet the Taiwanese Electric Motorcycle Subsidy Policy and Criteria.

The two parties agreed to hold discussions for specific collaboration in marching to the markets of electric motorcycles and electric scooters in Taiwan.  Under this collaboration, NEC TOKIN will supply TD HiTech Energy the outstanding lithium ion battery cell; and TD HiTech Energy will apply such cell to the existing advanced Battery Management System (BMS), which is the core technology of TD HiTech Energy, in providing the best fitting lithium ion battery pack and system for electric motorcycles and electric scooters. Furthermore, through this collaboration, TD HiTech Energy is able to supply a safe, high efficiency and performance lithium ion battery module for domestic electric motorcycle providers to elevate the competitiveness of Taiwanese electric motorcycle industry.

This 48 volt/ 20 Ampere hour (48V/20Ah) lithium ion battery pack developed for electric scooter will be taking lead in passing all the safety testing standard conforming to the Taiwanese Government E-Scooter Subsidy Policy and Criteria.  With this product of safety, high efficiency, intelligence and reliability ready, TD HiTech Energy officially announce entering Taiwanese electric scooter market.

NEC TOKIN is one of a few manufacturers in the world that produce  lithium ion battery for electronic vehicle applications.  Their products have been used in electric vehicles since year 2002, and NEC TOKIN is the earliest battery manufacturer that enters the electric vehicle market in lithium ion battery industry.  The cathode electrode material developed and used by NEC TOKIN is lithium manganese oxide compound which is more stable, safer and lighter in weight.  As NEC TOKIN has dedicated themselves in research and development of lithium manganese oxide compound for a long time and, thus, has achieved a great breakthrough in material and laminate cell structure for safety and cycle life under high temperature.  It is the most stable and reliable hi-power lithium ion battery at this moment.

TD HiTech Energy has carried on plans and cultivated the markets of electric motorcycles and electric scooters in depth with lithium ion battery pack for years. The battery packs provided by TD HiTech Energy have been approved by some major global international system providers, with which TD HiTech has already engaged in large contracts.

TD HiTech Energy has been aggressively seeking for advanced battery manufacturing partner, and NEC TOKIN, which lithium ion battery for electric vehicles has reached the topmost and global level, has also been exploring a partner for battery module and pack manufacturer for electric motorcycles and electric scooters.  On this day, we announce that we share the common interest and business goal under the high-minded ideals of creating better electric motorcycle and electric scooter markets for lithium ion battery and pack.

The above mentioned safety test standard that we are intended to carry on is the similar test standard of the well-known international safety test "BATSO - Battery Safety Standard Organization", which will be most likely to be international standard for the products of electric motorcycles and electric scooters in 2010. Therefore, our successful qualification of this test is implying that our lithium ion battery product will also be the first "BATSO Certified" battery pack in the world for the industries of electric motorcycles and electric scooters at the same time. TD HiTech Energy will be in a great position to obtain advantages and enjoy sustainable growth in the global markets of electric motorcycles and electric scooters.  TD HiTech Energy will be very soon ready to provide and offer more selection of advanced battery packs with better performance for both existing and potential electric scooter industry.  TD HiTech Energy has made a significant step forward in lithium ion battery market with more advantages and competitiveness.
